Community Navigators

A Community Navigator is a community member who comes alongside a family to help strengthen the community around them. The Navigator has pervious experience with services and has often "been there". She or he understands that families need services, but they also need a community of support.

The Navigator has connections within both the informal and formal resource networks and can advocate and assist families in what looks like a maze of service requirements AND help them build the relationships they need so that they can more successfully achieve their goals.

"It helps to have someone to talk to who has been there"

Sometimes families that interact with social services are confused by all the programs and paperwork. Sometimes families find it difficult to navigate their schedules and lives to complete the requirements of a program. Families benefit from someone who has successfully navigated the system before them to act as a guide, as a "navigator".

"The Navigator really understood my situation. She made me feel I had something to contribute"

Does a family you work with need some additional help navigating the system, or just a little extra support to be the parent they want to be?

The Whatcom Family & Community Network is able to link Community Navigators with families under Community's Commitment to Children, a contract with DCFS to support families who need additional assistance to successfully achieve reunification.
