Convening

Whatcom Youth Service Day – WFCN is hosting Whatcom Youth Service Day, April 26, 2008, as a day to recognize the enormous contribution in leadership and volunteerism that youth provide to our community.  The County Executive has signed a proclamation and Swil Kanim will perform in this annual youth recognition event.

Community Building Awards – December 3, 2008 the Network will hold its annual Ken Gass Community Building Awards Dinner at St. Luke’s Health Education Center.  This recognition and fundraising event celebrates 25 youth, adults, businesses, and organizations that have done outstanding work during the year to increase the community’s capacity to support healthy and safe children and families.

Whatcom Early Learning Systems Network – WFCN partnered this year with the WELSN to bring Bill Gates, Sr. to our community for the 1st Annual Business Leadership Luncheon for Early Learning.  This event was the kick off event for the Whatcom Business Partnership for Early Learning, a group of local business leaders focusing on how businesses can better support the healthy development of our community’s young children.

Town Hall Meeting on Under Age Drinking – This year WFCN partnered with the Whatcom County Health Department to bring Dr. Robert Anda to present the results of the Adverse Childhood Experience Study to over 250 local providers and community leaders.  We also co-sponsored two town hall meetings on underage drinking that we will expand to more communities next year.

The Network legally operates under the  501(c)(3) private nonprofit  "Whatcom County Commission on Children and Youth" and is affiliated with the Washington State Family Policy Council, a family-community-state partnership that helps prevent child abuse and neglect, youth substance abuse and supports school success and other issues concerning families.
